Is it ethical (or even legal) to hide a cancer diagnosis and start treatment without the patient’s consent? Patients often prefer knowing the diagnosis along with their family members, not after the family has already been told. Patients also expect to be offered some form of hope and to have all the treatment options explained to them.

Many family members often request to hide cancer diagnosis from patient, hoping that this is a gesture to protect the patient. However, based on years of experience, Dr Teo is telling us that revealing the diagnosis to patients doesn’t negatively impact patients’ quality of life, and may even be associated with better treatment outcomes.

Of course, breaking bad news is not easy. BUT, telling the truth is the first step in cancer treatment and is regarded as essential in modern medical practice.
